Public Forums on “Decent work”

6 - 10 October 2008

CGTP-IN’s National Council has decided to participate in the “World Day for Decent Work” promoted by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and supported by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

CGTP-IN’s joins this action in an autonomous way and its references are the Portuguese social and labour context, our own concept of “decent work”, based on upward social harmonization and the objectives we are fighting for.

The CGTP-IN considers that in Portugal there are many reasons to fight for “decent work”. The government and the employers are promoting a violent offensive against men and women workers’ rights and interests. This attack is particularly obvious in the government’s attempt to approve, in Parliament, a new Labour Code, which aims to further deregulate and make labour relations and contract links even more precarious, seriously undermining job stability and rights and disrespecting the organization of time and private life of workers and their families.

Having organised a National Action Day, on October 1st against this review of labour legislation, for better salaries and for stable employment, the CGTP-IN will now organise some events, in the framework of the “World Day for Decent Work”.

Our own motto for these events will be:

“Jobs with rights – Progress and Development”

From 6 to 10 October 2008, the CGTP-IN will hold debates and street rallies and forums in several Portuguese cities.

On October 7th, in the capital, Lisbon, we will hold a Public Forum, at 2.30pm, in front of the Labour Ministry.
